Yellow-flesh Tropical Honey RZ
meets consumer demands

Yellow watermelon is a niche product, but one with potential, according to Angel del Pino of Anecoop: “It is an ideal partner for red watermelon, because they complement each other to perfection in all sorts of delicious dishes.” When the Spanish cooperative went in search of a yellow variety with better quality and size, it was pleasantly surprised by Rijk Zwaan’s new variety, Tropical Honey RZ. Innovating helps Anecoop to move ‘freshly forward’, in line with Rijk Zwaan’s theme at Fruit Logistica.

Watermelons have been gaining popularity during the last years. Whether it is the overall improved fruit quality or e.g. the focus on smaller fruit sizes that match well with the current demographic changes or any other reason … higher consumption figures are a fact.

In a growing market with a rather limited assortment, it is important to broaden the offer for consumers. Surprise consumers with new, top quality products. This is what our tropical range of watermelons is about: a tropical surprise!

Not just different colours

The bright yellow colour is the obvious first change. The combination and the contrast with the standard red wm’s very attractive. Consumers are really triggered by this new offer.
But it is not just the colour, its distinctive refreshing flavour is an important way to stimulate repeat purchases.

We believe the expansion of the offer will contribute to the continuation of the growth of watermelon consumption.
