From consumer insights to chain solutions
Market & consumer insights
Within Rijk Zwaan we carry out a lot of consumer research, and we closely follow trends and market developments. We use these consumer insights to breed improved varieties but we also actively share our findings with our customers to co-create future chain solutions.

Beef tomato Tafury canboost the entire segment
“Tafury RZ enables us to offer our customers a tasty and visually appealing beef tomato as a way of stimulating the market for medium-sized and large tomatoes,” says Christopher Juranek from REWE Germany. The food retail chain has been carrying this Rijk Zwaan tomato under its REWE Bio label since winter 2021/2022. Foodwaste reduction
Food should be eaten, not thrown away. It sounds simple, yet one third of all food globally is wasted – either during cultivation or the production process, in the supermarket or by consumers. That's why we're looking for plant traits that extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. More retail news
New collaboration between European growers enables consumers to enjoy Snack Lettuce year round
Five major European growers’ cooperatives have joined forces to supply Rijk Zwaan’s innovative Crunchy Lettuce to retail chains throughout Europe all year round. The three Spanish founders – JimboFresh International, Fruca and El Dulze – are excited about the new chapter in this story. “Together with the leading growers’ cooperatives Landfrisch AG in Germany and Fellini Patrizio Srl in Italy, we can reach out to a new generation of consumers who will love the texture, flavour and crunch of this unique product, 365 days a year,” says Miguel Ángel Jiménez, CEO of JimboFresh. Four of the growers’ cooperatives and Rijk Zwaan will showcase this Snack Lettuce on their booths at this year’s Fruit Logistica in Berlin.
"Thanks to these varieties, we can increase the quality and volumes of our productions."
After introducing the first tomato varieties with high resistance to ToBRFV from the new Rugose Defense line, Rijk Zwaan strengthens its partnership with Fri-El Green House, an alliance that has been established for several years. At the end of 2022, the seed company launched the Rugose Defense line, tomato varieties with high resistance (HR) to ToBRFV. Identifying a genetic source resistant to the virus was a priority in the varietal development programs, leading to the creation of the new HR ToBRFV portfolio, well-stocked with all the main tomato types: clusters, cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes, and cocktail tomatoes.
Sweet Palermo® colour mixes are gaining shelf space
Red, yellow, orange and chocolate… Dutch grower Marcel van Kester cultivates the whole range of colours of Sweet Palermo, the surprisingly sweet pointed pepper. “Not just the red variant, but all the colours excel in terms of taste. That remains the brand’s key strength,” he says. Even more retailers are planning to introduce mixed-colour packs in addition to the red Sweet Palermo, and the Norwegian supplier BAMA is one company supporting this move. Marcel will talk about how this trend is helping his company to move ‘freshly forward’, as expressed in Rijk Zwaan’s theme for Fruit Logistica in Berlin.
