At Rijk Zwaan, we have developed our Galuna melon line in response to the general decrease in product quality of Galia melons over the past decades. This decline has been the result of developments primarily focused on extending the shelf life. However, these developments left consumers disappointed by the inconsistent quality and lack of sweetness. With the Galuna line, we have risen to the challenge to develop melons that not only have an excellent shelf life, but also have a very good taste.

Thanks to an innovative visual quality indicator, melons in the Galuna line turn from green to yellow at the exact moment that they are optimally ripe and full of flavour. This makes it easy for growers to see when the melons have reached their peak quality and are ready to be harvested. Thanks to the innovative visual quality indicator, it is easy for growers to see when the Galuna melons have reached their peak quality and are full of flavour, ready to be harvested. The current generation of long shelf-life varieties often turn yellow before they are mature. As a result, there can be significant variations between the brix values of melons, despite them all having the same appearance on the shelf. This can leave consumers dissatisfied with their experience of quality and sweetness of Galia melons.
For our Galuna line, we have focused on perfecting the brix level (at least 14 to 17) at the point of harvest. Moreover, the melons have an excellent shelf life. This ensures top-tier quality at every stage of the supply chain so that every consumer can enjoy a consistently delicious bite and sweet taste.
Consumers will easily spot the attractive, uniform Galuna melon on the shelf, thanks to its appealing creamy colour, making it an ‘easy’ purchase. The first Galuna varieties are already available for Spanish growers and will be rolled out to retailers together with these partners.
