Developments in (water)melon

Snacking is a global trend. Consumers tend to eat more different products in smaller volumes. This also counts for watermelon. As a fruit and vegetable breeding company, Rijk Zwaan is trying to develop new products that fit with market trends. For some of these trends it is hard to do so, but for others it is more common sense. In a world where households get smaller in size and options in choices for food are increasing, it is clear that the sizes of the portions will decrease.

Yield and quality are important success factors

Fruit quality is a critical success factor. So it is not about squeezing a standard, larger sized watermelon in a smaller fruit size. This is in most cases the way to loose fruit quality.
It is about genetically smaller varieties that have the same or better fruit quality compared to the standard larger sized watermelons. The varieties in our Candy Ball assortment are genetically smaller in size, so specifically bred varieties.

Another important factor is the yield or production at farm level. Smaller fruits can easily lead to lower yields per hectare. The Candy Ball varieties have a higher natural fruit setting, which is the basis for good productivity.
